Carlos Juan Finlay was a doctor from Cuba. In 1881, he had an important idea about yellow fever. This disease killed many people in hot places near the ocean.
People thought yellow fever came from dirty air or bad objects. But Finlay believed mosquitoes carried the disease from sick people to healthy people. He watched mosquitoes and sick patients for many years.
Other doctors did not believe Finlay's idea. They thought he was wrong. But Finlay continued his work. He knew mosquitoes were dangerous.
Twenty years later, other scientists tested Finlay's idea. They found out he was right! Mosquitoes really did spread yellow fever. Finlay lived to see people believe his discovery before he died in 1915.
