A caterpillar is not a different animal. It is a baby butterfly or moth. This is its first stage of life.
Caterpillars eat a lot every day. They eat leaves and grow bigger and bigger. Their skin gets too small, so they shed it. This is called molting. A caterpillar can grow 2,000 times bigger than when it hatched!
Different caterpillars eat different plants. For example, monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed leaves.
After growing, the caterpillar makes a chrysalis. Inside, something amazing happens. Its whole body breaks down and builds again in a new form. This is called metamorphosis. It is not just growing wings—it is a total change!
Some caterpillars have bright colors. This tells birds, 'Don't eat me, I taste bad!' Caterpillars also breathe through small holes on their sides, not their mouths.

หลังจากโตแล้ว หนอนผีเสื้อจะสร้างดักแด้ ข้างในนั้นมีสิ่งมหัศจรรย์เกิดขึ้น ร่างกายทั้งหมดของมันสลายตัวและสร้างขึ้นใหม่เป็นรูปร่างใหม่ เรียกว่า metamorphosis มันไม่ใช่แค่การงอกปีก แต่เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งหมด!
