Elizabeth Peratrovich was an Alaska Native woman from the Tlingit people. She lived in Alaska in the 1940s. At that time, Alaska had bad laws. These laws said that Native people could not go to some restaurants and hotels.
Elizabeth did not like these unfair laws. She worked with her husband Roy to fight for equal rights. They helped organize groups to change the laws. In 1945, Elizabeth spoke to government leaders in Alaska.
Her speech was very powerful. She asked the leaders an important question: Would you want laws against you because of your race? The leaders listened to her words. They decided to change the laws.
Alaska passed a new law in 1945. This law said all people must be treated the same way. It was one of the first laws like this in America. Today, February 16 is Elizabeth Peratrovich Day in Alaska.
