Long ago, baseball players had a big problem. A rule called the 'reserve clause' kept players with one team forever. Even after their contract ended, players could not leave. Team owners had all the power.
This rule started in the 1880s. It was only in baseball, not other sports. Players could not choose their team. They could not ask for more money, either.
In 1975, two pitchers named Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally said this was not fair. A judge named Peter Seitz agreed with them. He said the reserve clause could only last one year, not forever.
This decision changed everything. Players could now become 'free agents.' They could move to new teams and ask for better pay. Salaries went up fast because teams wanted the best players.
Soon, other sports like basketball and football copied this idea too. Today, players have much more freedom and power in their careers.
