Fireflies are small insects that make light in their bodies. Most fireflies flash their lights alone, but some special fireflies flash together at the same time. This is called synchronous flashing.
These special fireflies live in places like Thailand, Malaysia, and some parts of North America. Male fireflies flash their lights to find female fireflies. Each type of firefly has its own flashing pattern.
The fireflies make light using chemicals in their bodies. This light helps them talk to each other. When many fireflies flash together, it looks like a beautiful light show in nature.
The fireflies don't have a leader. They watch other fireflies and copy their flashing time. This happens naturally when many fireflies are together in warm, wet weather.
