In 1859, something amazing happened in space. The Sun sent a very strong solar storm to Earth. This event is called the Carrington Event. It was named after Richard Carrington, a scientist who saw it happen through his telescope.
The solar storm made beautiful lights in the sky. People could see green and red lights even in places like Cuba and Hawaii. These lights are called aurora. Usually, people can only see aurora in very cold places near the North and South Poles.
The storm also broke telegraph machines all over the world. Telegraph was how people sent messages far away in 1859. The machines got sparks and some even caught fire. Telegraph workers got electric shocks.
Scientists today worry about solar storms like this. If the same thing happened now, it would break our computers, phones, and power systems. That is why scientists watch the Sun carefully to warn us about dangerous solar storms.
