In the 1920s and 1930s, doctors in Germany and Japan started making modern IUDs. They tried different shapes and materials. The most popular design today looks like the letter 'T' and was made in the 1970s.
In the 1970s, there was a problem with one IUD called the Dalkon Shield. It made many women sick. Because of this, people stopped using IUDs in America for many years. But IUDs stayed popular in other countries.
Today, there are two main types of IUDs. One type uses copper metal. The other type releases hormones. Both types work very well to prevent pregnancy. They stop pregnancy from happening, not after it starts.
