How Dogs Experience Smell

Dogs smell things very differently from humans. They have about 300 million smell receptors in their nose. Humans only have 6 million. This means dogs can smell things we cannot even notice.

Dogs can smell very tiny amounts of things. They can smell one drop of liquid in a huge swimming pool. Their brain has a big part just for smelling. This part is 40 times bigger than the same part in human brains.

Dogs use smell to understand the world around them. They can smell who was in a place before and when they were there. Each nostril works by itself, so dogs can tell which direction a smell comes from.

Some dogs can even smell when people are sick. They can smell changes in our body before we know we are getting sick. This shows how amazing a dog's nose really is.
