The Moon was not always there. A long time ago, about 4.5 billion years ago, a big space rock hit the young Earth. Scientists call this rock Theia.
The crash was very big and very hot. It broke pieces off Earth and sent them into space. These pieces went around Earth in the sky.
Slowly, the pieces came together. Gravity pulled them into one big ball. This ball became the Moon.
Long ago, the Moon was much closer to Earth. Today, the Moon moves away from Earth a little every year.
Scientists learned about this from Moon rocks. Astronauts brought Moon rocks back to Earth. The rocks help us understand how the Moon was born.
